Health Unit Clerk Long Term Care, FT
Role Overview
The Health Unit Clerk assists the nursing staff in providing efficient, effective and safe resident care specific to the diagnosis and age of resident served, utilizing communication and clerical skills. This is based on the knowledge of growth and development over the life span. The care is provided under the direction of the nurse in accordance with accepted, policies, unit-specific competencies and the South Dakota Nurse Practice Act

Essential Functions
The Health Unit Clerk shall perform clerical duties which may include answering phones and EMS radio, transferring physician orders to resident charts, organizing and thinning resident charts, scheduling and assisting with doctor rounds, and entering routine labs into Meditech. This position may also answer call lights and assist resident cares as needed and assist aides in delivering meals to the residents. The Health Unit Clerk shall be responsible for maintaining a neat and orderly work area for the professional staff.

Other duties shall include scheduling appointments, arranging transportation for residents to meet appointments and accompanying residents to appointments; sorting and delivering residents’ personal mail to their rooms; assisting with resident activities as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
• Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Some medical background beneficial
•Technical Skills: Ability to effectively communicate with residents, their families and staff.
•Equipment: Basic computer skills; basic knowledge of telephone systems and the operation of copy and fax machines.
